Renewable Energy – Wind Power

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Wind power is the useful form of energy that can be obtained from wind renewable energy. Wind power can be defined as renewable wind energy that has been converted to useful electrical energy. A way of harnessing wind renewable energy is by using wind turbines to produce electricity. Wind turbines have blades that rotate to convert the wind renewable energy to electric energy by means of an electric generator incorporated within the wind turbines. For commercial use, large amount of electricity needs to be generated which can be achieved by installing wind farms where a number of wind turbines are used together.

The use of wind renewable power has been known for a long time. This alternative energy source was used in windmills to pump water or to grind grains.

There are a lot of advantages of wind power. The main benefit of wind renewable power is that it does not cause pollution. Any types of chemical processes are not required when wind power is used and so no harmful by-products are left over that can contaminate the environment and thus degrade it. Wind power is a renewable energy source and so we can never run out of it. Using wind renewable power does not emit any global warming gases. Also it is a cost effective way of generating electricity.

There are some disadvantages also of using wind power. The use of wind turbines causes noise pollution. Also wind farms require a large area of land that could have been otherwise used for other purposes.

Renewable wind energy – an alternative power source

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The blowing wind possesses kinetic energy which can be converted to several useful forms of energy that can be put to use for many purposes. This kinetic energy needs to be harnessed so that renewable wind energyy can be put to use in different applications. Renewable wind energy can be harnessed by using machines called wind turbines.

A wind turbine has two or three propeller like blades which are called rotors. These blades or rotors are attached to the top of a very tall tower. When the wind blows, the rotors spin and power a generator. The generator has a large number of copper connectors and magnets that produce electricity. This electricity can be used as an alternative power source to meet the power needs of urban and rural areas.

Rotors are installed at a height so that they can capture the maximum renewable wind energy whose intensity is more at high altitudes. This also ensures maximum power generation. The electricity generated by a wind turbine can be used as an alternative power source to meet the power requirements of a single household or a small community and can also be used to power mills for grinding grains and to pump water. However, the electricity produced by a wind turbine is not enough for commercial purposes. Therefore, wind farms need to be installed with a large number of wind turbines. Together, this large number of wind turbines generate enormous amount of electricity that is supplied to electricity provider companies that provide electricity for commercial use.

Renewable Alternative Energy Sources from Geothermal Energy

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

We all know that the earth produces some heat below its surface in the deep interiors. The temperature at which this heat is produced is far much higher than the actual temperature of the sun’s surface. This heat generated under the earth’s surface can be used as a renewable energy source called geothermal energy. The heat at which this heat is produced is so high that energy can not uphold itself below the surface and so it finds a way through volcanoes, hot springs and fumaroles to appear at the surface of the earth..
A large part of the geothermal energy resources are found near the Pacific Ocean. Pacific Ocean comprises of a Ring of Fire where a significant amount of geothermal energy is produced as an alternative energy source. This alternative energy source produced from the molten core of the earth is mainly used to produce electricity. This magma is available in abundance below the earth’s surface and this is the reason why geothermal energy is considered to be a renewable energy source.
Electricity produced from the geothermal energy resources uses technologies namely, binary technology or flash technology. In the flash technology, the water available at extremely high temperatures as a geothermal energy resource is super heated to produce steam, which then drives to a turbine to generate electricity. In the binary technology, heat of the geothermal water is transferred to another liquid to produce vapors which then drive turbines for producing electricity. This electricity produced by the use of geothermal energy can be further used for several other purposes.

Biodiesel Power Products – Advantages & Disadvantages

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Biodiesel energy obtained from biodiesel energy products that can be converted into usable energy forms known as biodiesel power. Biodiesel power resources can be put to several uses. The main use of biodiesel power resources is to supply power to diesel vehicles so that they can run smoothly and efficiently.

There are many advantages of biodiesel power resources. They are clean and non toxic alternative power resources. Biodiesel power is obtained from bio diesel which as a green renewable energy source does not emit harmful substances on burning. Biodiesel power products do not emit greenhouse gases. They are biodegradable. And above all they are renewable energy sources.

A major disadvantage of biodiesel power products is that they are very costly. Because of this it is usually not chosen by consumers as a fuel. The use of biodiesel power resources increases the amount of nitrogen oxide in the air which causes smog. The energy content and concentration of bio diesel is less and therefore biodiesel power products result in power loss in engines of vehicles. As an alternative energy source, bio diesel is not widely available and therefore bio diesel power cannot be easily generated at all places. The hoses of vehicles are made of rubber that can be degraded by use of bio diesel.

But the advantages of biodiesel power products outweigh their disadvantages. With the increasing energy demands, the use of biodiesel power products is becoming more popular as alternative power sources because they are cost effective.

Solar Energy- A Green Renewable Energy Source

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Solar energy is the energy obtained from the sun which is an alternative energy resource. The energy is available either in the form of heat or light. Solar energy can benefit a number of people as it can be put to many uses. It is an alternative energy source that is readily and freely available

There are a number of advantages of solar energy. The most important of them is the fact that it is a renewable source of energy whose supply will last till there is sun. It is also a non polluting source of energy. The use of solar cells requires low maintenance and these are long lasting. The devices that use solar energy are easy to install and operate. As a green renewable source, it does not adversely affect the eco-system. Solar energy is also a cost effective alternative energy source.

Solar energy also has many disadvantages. The devices that use this alternative energy resource are very expensive. Adequate sunshine must be ensured for exploring the full potential of renewable solar energy. Many solar energy devices use cadmium which is a highly toxic substance and can cause the degradation of the environment. This alternative energy source cannot be used at night for the generation of solar energy.

Solar energy as an alternative energy source has not been utilized to its full potential. This is because the methods of harnessing solar energy are few and not efficient. New and improved methods must be developed for effective trapping of solar energy so that it can be utilized in a better manner.

Geothermal Earth Power Products & Cooling Systems

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

The geothermal energy or the earth energy can be put to several uses. By using proper techniques, it can be converted to useful electrical energy called geothermal power. Geothermal power can be used in various applications.

One common application of earth power is the geothermal cooling system. The geothermal cooling system uses the fact that the ground remains cooler than the surrounding atmosphere during summers and it remains warmer than the surrounding atmosphere during winters. This keeps the buildings cool during summers.

It is important to understand that geothermal cooling systems do not produce heat or cold as geothermal power products. They function to transfer heat from one place to another. Such a system consists of pipes, delivery system and a heat exchanger unit. The heat exchanger unit is installed in ground near the building and transfer heat. During a hot summer day, a refrigerant or water flows through the system into the earth through pipes. In the depths of the earth, the water is cooled and then transferred back to the delivery system. The cool water circulates through the home and absorbs the heat causing it to get heated and is then transferred back into the ground for cooling. This is the simplest configuration of such a system. Changing and improving technologies have helped in developing systems that can work efficiently.

The use of cooling systems that work on earth power can help to reduce the electricity bills by a significant amount. Geothermal power used in these systems is a renewable energy source and will always be available.

Advantages and Disadvantages of BioDiesel Energy Products

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Biodiesel energy is the renewable energy source obtained from bio diesel which is a non petroleum based fuel obtained from either vegetable oil or yellow grease. As alternative energy resources, biodiesel energy products find use in the railways, airlines industry and for heating at domestic sites.

The advantages of using biodiesel energy are many. The main benefit is that as a green renewable energy source, it reduces the carbon monoxide emissions into the environment by almost fifty percent. Vehicles using biodiesel energy work more efficiently and start comparatively faster than vehicles that use conventional energy sources because biodiesel has a property that it ignites quickly. It is a biodegradable energy source and can be generated in any part of the world. Biodiesel is an eco friendly energy source as there are no fuel emissions.

There are some disadvantages also of using this alternative energy source. Bio diesel used as a biodiesel energy product can clog fuel pipes of vehicles at low temperatures and may also deteriorate rubber parts of broilers or furnaces. When bio diesel burns, it leaves behind residue that may clog the pipes at homes. Though biodiesel energy products are eco friendly, they still may emit high amounts of nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere causing degradation of the environment.

Most countries of the world are developing technologies and methods that can be used to explore the full potential of biodiesel energy as an alternative energy source because of the advantages it offers.

Alternative Power Sources Meet Energy Requirements for Transportation

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Alternative power sources have been used by mankind for a very long time. Alternative power resources provided solutions to problems of heat and light during the early civilizations. Renewable energy resources like solar power and wind power were familiar to the people in early times. Many people built their houses in a direction where they could get maximum exposure to sunlight to get solar energy. Wind power was used for sailing of boats. Thus alternative power sources in earlier times were used to meet energy requirements and for transportation.

Alternative power resources in the present day are an economical and convenient means that can be used to meet the ever increasing energy demands. Development of alternative power sources is being made by the use of expensive and innovative technologies so that these sources can be used to meet the energy requirements of the nations of the world.

The use of alternative power is increasing day by day and is also being promoted because it is generated from renewable energy sources that will never end and therefore alternative power will always be available for use. The use of alternative power resources does not adversely affect the environment. These sources are also less expensive as compared to fossil fuels.

In a situation where the fuel prices are ever increasing and the reserves of coal and petroleum are fast declining, only alternative power sources have the ability and capacity to meet the energy demands of the world that were earlier fulfilled by sources like coal and petroleum.
