Alternative Energy News

Oil and gas deposits in Algeria are finite. The scorching sun is not. Even though the North African nation gets 95% of its export earnings from oil, it decided to exploit the one alternative energy resource they knew they would have indefinitely, a resource that could power the world four times over. So Algeria constructed an enormous solar facility a year ago with parabolic solar troughs nearly 45 football fields wide in the Sahara Desert.

Not only will Algerian homes and businesses be powered, but European ones as well, with the final objective to export 6,000 megawatts to Europe by 2020. That is the equivalent of 4 million homes. As the technology behind solar cells gets better, the facility becomes more and more productive.

Elsewhere on the continent, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, the lack of electricity is a deterrent to investors. With demand growing 8% a year, the Rift Valley, which stretches from the northern end of the Red Sea down to Mozambique in east Africa, may hold the solution hidden in the ground: geothermal power. An alternative energy source that is impervious to any kind of weather and minimal carbon emissions. Perhaps most crucially, though, east Africa sorely lacks west Africa's oil or the Sahel's capacity for solar power.

So geothermal power is a very inexpensive source of alternative energy. Hydroelectric dams currently power much of the area, but are subject to drought. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates its potential yield as 14,0000 megavolts, while only 200 megavolts are being currently harvested. With the right infrastructure and capital, it could provide 10-25% of the region's energy by 2030.

What is Alternative Energy?

The expression alternative energy is a hypernym that defines the resources of energy that is usable with the intention to replace the sources of fuel without the unwanted consequences of the substitute fuels. The nature of what was considered as alternative energy has changed considerably over time.

Alternative Energy Sources

Initially, wood was taken to be the alternative energy source as it was available in abundance and it was believed that the forest area will never come to a close. Nevertheless, as deforestation increased, the use of wood as an alternative energy source decreased.
The chief alternative energy sources are:

• Solar energy (energy acquired from sun) - it is most crucial alternative energy source because it is unlimited. Sun will continue giving energy.
• Wind energy (energy of the wind) – it is also used for generating electricity. One cannot rely upon wind and thus, it needs to be preserved for potential use.
• Wave energy (energy from waves) – waves are utilized to turn turbines to produce electricity.
• Tidal power (energy from tides) – it is mainly used for the generation of electricity.
• Ocean thermal energy (energy from ocean) – energy is captured in the form of heat. The heat is used to turn turbines and generate electricity.
• Hydroelectric energy (energy from running water) – the energy from running water is used to produce electricity.
• Fuel cells – it produces electricity without any pollution. It only releases water as a residue.

Why Use Alternative Energy?

The most straightforward response to this question would be that the reserves of oil on the earth are not going to remain everlastingly. A time will come when it will become too costly to pierce for oil or it would cease completely. Alternative energy is a remedy to this problem as it is a renewable source of energy.

Another reason is that it is pollution free and is environment friendly.

The costs of the fuels are gradually rising. In this course, alternative energy sources proffer the best possible way out to meet the demands of energy in future.

Alternative Energy Products

The alternative energy store presents several benefits and advantages in contrast to the conventional energy resources.

• Alternative energy resources are renewable in nature.
• It diminishes the costs of energy.
• It declines the enslavement of fossil fuels for the needs of energy.
• It is a clean and reliable energy source.
• Once begun, the use of alternative energy is monetary.
• It is eco-friendly as no harmful chemicals or gases are released into the environment by the generation from companies of alternative energy.
• It is a prolonged resource of energy.
• Maintenance is not required.
• Alternative energy will always be freely and readily available.
• It is helpful in reducing global warming.

Alternative Energy also possesses a major disadvantage. Its generation requires trained people and upgraded machinery. These are costly and thus, the production of alternative energy is pricey.

Alternative energy is gaining popularity day by day to meet the needs of energy due to the several advantages it offers. It will surely become a crucial source of energy in upcoming times and thus, techniques must be developed that can make the production of alternative energy cheaper.
