Solar Energy
Solar energy can be converted into thermal and electrical energy. Solar energy plays a critical role in supporting life on earth. Solar energy is what grows food, supplies light and determines climatic conditions. Solar energy is unlimited though scientists claim the sun is cooling down. But there is no danger of any shortage of supply of solar energy for the next few millennia.
Because solar energy is a renewable source, it is sometimes referred to as a ‘Green Power’. In mankind’s pursuit of alternative energy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and with the consciousness of global emissions, means of exploiting solar energy are actively being pursued.
The most common use of solar energy is by converting it into electricity. There are two routine ways in which this is done:
Using photovoltaic or solar cells sunlight is converted directly into electricity. Such devices have been popular in remote areas outside the transmission grid.
Of late, smaller more compact units use solar energy from something so simple as domestic water heaters, to driving sophisticated systems in satellites in orbit high above planet earth.
Solar power plants convert solar energy into electricity indirectly. Solar energy is harnessed to produce steam which in turn drives turbines that power generators.
The concept of using solar energy to drive motor vehicles is being actively explored. Experimental hybrid cars are already on the road, the limiting factor being the space required for the solar collectors. But with the advent of nanotechnology newer concepts in harnessing solar energy are now becoming a reality. If this succeeds which inevitably it will, the result will be an enormous load taken off fossil fuel and a cleaner environment.
Solar energy refers to the glowing heat and light from the sun that is being yoked by human beings since primordial times through the use of ever sprouting technologies. Solar rays along with resultant solar resources like wave power and wind, biomass and hydroelectricity comprise a majority of existing renewable energy on the planet. Just a minute fraction of the accessible solar energy is used.
Solar energy provides electrical production by way of photovoltaic or heat engines. Once transformed its usages are confined by human creativity. A fractional list of solar appliances comprises of cooling and space heating through potable water via disinfection and distillation, solar architecture, hot water, day lighting and thermal energy to cook.
Types of Solar Energy
The sun produces energy that can be acquired as solar energy as light energy and thermal or heat energy.
Two types of solar energy is being presently used i.e. solar photovoltaic and solar thermal.
Solar photovoltaic is that type of energy that changes solar energy into electricity. Solar photovoltaic cells transform solar energy into DC current. This DC current can be switched to AC voltage to deliver electricity to houses or it can be stockpiled in batteries that can be used for power supply at night. Solar photovoltaic cells are made up of a silicon material that undergoes many chemical procedures so that photovoltaic cells are finally used.
Solar energy is used by solar thermal for heating substances. Solar energy as solar thermal energy is used for pool heating, space heating and water heating. The devices are normally called solar collectors that can be established on building roof tops. They collect and stock up solar energy and use it further for space heating or heating water for household use.
Although solar energy is freely and readily available in both these forms, yet it discovers a very small amount of practice in devices. The foremost reason is that the expense of capturing solar energy is too much.
Solar Energy – A Renewable Solution
There are various reasons for which the solar energy is considered the best energy solution. The chief reason is that the solar energy is a renewable source of energy and will be present forever. It is sustainable and biodegradable. The production of electricity by solar energy does not involve any burning of fossil fuels. Thus, there is no emission of harmful chemicals, particles or substances into the environment that may be perilous to the health. Solar energy does not cause pollution and does not humiliate the environment by any means.
The chief reason of solar energy being the best remedy of energy needs is that it is accessible free of cost. Thus, it is lucrative which is very much crucial for the world economy which is already low due to the increasing fuel prices.
The perception of solar energy as a means of alternative source of energy is not a new one. Solar energy has been put to use since a long time but not in a prudent and efficient manner. The time has come when people need to exploit solar energy to its full potential.
